Teaching & Training Activities

The department is the only one in the country and perhaps the south-east Asia to provide a structured training program for trainees in this surgical sub-specialty. A year long post-doctoral certificate course (PDCC) was started for the first time in India in 1997, and was continued until 2004. Since January 2004, the department has on offer a 3 years MCI recognized M.Ch course in Endocrine & Breast surgery, again a first in the country. Two students are accepted for training every year as part of the MCh program. The department also trains practicing surgeons as part of the “Short term trainee” program of SGPGI. Trainees from within India need to fulfill eligibility criteria as laid down by the institute. Those from SAARC and other foreign countries are accommodated as per case basis, and are required to get their own funding, and clearances from the Ministry of Foreign affairs, Govt. of India and the parent country authorities, besides obtaining temporary registration from the Medical Council of India and appropriate Indian visa.
Continuing medical education:
The department conducts various continuing medical and surgical education programs, workshops and symposia periodically, which are considered of high standard by peers and participants. These include the Postgraduate course in Endocrine Surgery (conducted every alternate year), SGPGI Breast Course (conducted alternate year), Diabetic foot Course, and symposia and workshops on endocrine pathology, endocrine imaging etc. The department utilizes the tele-medicine network and infrastructure for conduction of the various CME activities, which are shared with collaborating institutions in India and other countries, thus benefitting a larger audience.
